Adoption of the New York Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards Convention

It was published in the Resolution of the National Assembly n.º 38/16, on 12 August 2016, approving the adoption, by the Angolan state, of the New York Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards.

This publication means the end of the previous legal proceeding under which all foreign arbitral awards were necessarily subject to a process of revision and confirmation by the Angolan Supreme Court.

The Republic of Angola adopted a reservation pursuant to which the Country will only apply the Convention to arbitral awards issued in the territory of another contracting state and duly recognized by the Angolan state.

The date of application of the Convention is not clear, as the Resolution does not mention the fulfilment of the necessary formalities for its entrance into force, namely the deposit of the instrument of accession.
